It seems Stoats’ meet reports become synonymous with weather reports. Rainfall on the Saturday was continuous and the wind gusty. A large group set out for a gorge walk towards the Old Man of Coniston but decided they were wet enough after an hour or so. The meet organiser and I made our way over the lower slopes of Wetherlam and returned via Tilberthwaite. Sadly I was the only MAM representative. A couple of others had intended to come but had to cry off. Some others who might have come were involved in the ill-fated Mountain Marathon at Borrowdale. Maybe a better forecast would have helped. Let’s hope for a better turn out next time. Sunshine on Sunday morning briefly turned our thoughts towards the crags, but showers soon put paid to that and everybody cleared up and left for home or the Kendal wall, the latter giving good sport and the spectacle of an 8 to 10 year old boy leading routes up to 7a in fine style. In spite of the weather, it was an enjoyable weekend, with everybody making the most of it uncomplainingly. R H
